Filton lies on the A38 Trunk road about five
miles north of Bristol. Its most famous legacy is dealt with in many
other places. Even though we are fans, we will not mention it here. We
would like just to bring to the front, some of the more down to earth
bits about "our home town".
The most recent Census
showed we had a population of just short of ten thousand. This was
equally split by males and females. There were about 500 babies and
toddlers, the over 75's accounted for 1,000.
The
Religion is mainly Christian, and the three main Churches in the area
cater for approximately 75% of the residents. St. Peters, St. Andrews
and St. Teresa are all to be found on the main Gloucester Road within a
very short distance of each other. Filton also has other equally
important religions in the surrounding area.
Before the arrival of the Aircraft Industry.
Filton was mainly a Farming community, and many of them were run by
Families whose names would be recognised by the children of today.
Gayner and Wade being just two of them.
Shield's Laundry occupied the site of the
present day Shield Centre. From around 1869 until 1951. When the
buildings were sold to the BAC. The laundry gave employment to many
residents. Some of them would have to work the fields, before going into
laundry to do a days work.
Motor enthusiasts will also know Filton as the home of
the Bristol Car. This prestigious vehicle rates alongside the Rolls
Royce etc. as the best cars of our time.
